It's a falsehood to think you need loads of complex note and scale choices to create an intersting solo. A tutor on the jazz course I did last year played an amazing jazzy solo using just chord tones. The vast majority of songs, tunes, melodies, bass lines, solos, etc, use mostly chord tones. Chord tones out line harmony, that's why they sound good!

Christ, you lot have been busy today! Some good info there and here's my tuppence worth.
Learn the blues. It's one of the most simple forms of modern music, but covers almost everything you'll need for other forms.
I had lessons years ago at Basstech in Acton (with Terry Gregory and another fabulous player who's name escapes me at the moment, but he played the bass on the theme for Red Dwarf amongst other BBC sessions). When I started there I understood a bit of theory, but could not describe myself as "knowledgeable". After these guys had explained the modes and scales and relative keys, I still can't consider myself knowledgeable (!), but it all makes sense to me.

"Have you lot checked this guy out: www.munkio.com/music/music_videos.html"Sorry, I listened to the Donna Lee cover, and its awful. There's more passion in my toe nail clippings than there is/was in that solo. The loop jam thing sounds like billy sheehan using jaco scales... wheres the groove? humbug

The dodgy sound from web cam recording doesnt help.
I'm assuming you have the original of Donna Lee? He plays the melody pretty much spot on to the original - albeit at a reduced tempo. As for his solo on that tune well, it's better than I could improvise up over those chords.
Admittedly, it's OTT use of technique. But I assure you the guy can groove - I've heard him play in a band setting.
Anyway, the point in the clip is the advnaced slap techniques - i.e: the topic of the thread.
Is your slap, or fingerstyle technique that advanced? Is your time that good? Could you play a solo over the changes to Donna Lee? Honestly?

Rhino MoRhino - I just listened to your mp3s posted in the mp3s section... based on those I dont think you should be criticising others so harshly.

Based on what? I hope you can appreciate how difficult it is to create and improvise consistently for 45 minutes... maybe you could give it a try yourself

One more point... Why the fuck would I want to noodle solo's over someone elses material? I must apologise to you all for NOT being in a funk band. If i felt the need to show of my bass skills, i'd join a Level 42 tribute band. But what'd be the point in that? Wheres the originality? Creativity? Which is, if anyone really bothered to read, was what my original post was about. And if you want to make personal digs... I could go on about how I would expect a player of 14 years to be playing more 'varied' 'faster' scales using 'spot on technique'. But if i wanted that, i'd draw it into cubase myself. Whats the point?

I've played a lot of improv in my time, free or otherwise, and in a lot of different contexts and with a variety of different musicians.
I did enjoy the free improv aspect of your mp3s, it reminded of why enjoy improv myself, but that doenst change the fact that your harsh criticism of Mikes playing is unjustified and, quite clearly, ignorant.
ALL jazz musicians/ bands use other peoples tunes as a framework for improvistion. It's what jazz is about! Are you saying that jazz is unoriginal and non-creative?
In this case, Donna Lee, is a difficult melody, over complex chord changes and is played very fast, probably 220bpm or so. Soloing over those changes is far from easy.
So, if you dont 'get' it, it doesnt mean it's crap.
I wasnt making personal digs. Believe it or not, I do 'get' your bands clips, and I didnt critcise them or insult you. I just said that I didnt think you could 'afford' to chuck criticisms around. It's advice, take it or leave it.
