What tune first got you in to the funk?? My all time funknificant tune has got to be 'Pick Up the Pieces' by 'The Average White Band'
I remember when I first heard it!! It's just got the funkiest vibe to it. The live version is amazing - i've got a copy on tape somewhere that is so worn out through over playing.
I was a number of years after that until I started playing funk as I never had the outlet for it
We're lovin the funk!!

I think this thread is discriminating against rockers! Ban Funk. But yeah, that's a damn fine track. One of my fave basslines (and it's pretty funky to me) is Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke (in fact I'm listening to it right now). )

Jackson5!! Also I remember luvin 'runing in the family' level42 wen i was realy young but i dont think i realy understood about the funk slap thing! one of my first cd's was 'uplift mofo party plan' RHCP, so it wud be the chilies fer me i guess! Thats what led me to the god ol funky 60's/70's stuff, James Brown,Bootsy,Chic,meters.......... the great ppl who gave birth to the funk!!

I was bought up on Jackson 5 & Zepplin. I like them both but i could shake my booty to Jackson 5's "I want you back". When i was about 10 i was really into breakdance stuff...the Electro albums etc and a lot of that was Funk samples...I particularly like Afrika Bambaata, Sugar hill Gang, Beastie Boys etc ( i was an original beastie and even stole a VW sign...Sorry i was young), Then after a strange Anthrax style metal period i got into INXS, Prince etc....Then P_funk, Acid jazz, Ozrics & gong & Dub & jazz.
Now, i love all music that is good! I don't dig bad music but if i had to pigeon hole a stable genre where my love lives then it's sure be that dirty filthy darn FUNK
Funk is more than just the music....Those who know...know!

id deffo say the chilis opened the door for me. Before really appreciating slap i was a very old fasioned rock bassist. Id just have a lot of bass and hardly any treble. I felt when i had too much treble my fingers had to do far more work to make the sound punch through. Ive now educated myself in creating slick tones and slap has definately contributed to my developing style. I also think seeing other bassists around me helped as well. I've seen Gran torino Quite a few times as well as played with them in shrewsbury. So i guess ive kinda opened my ears to new genres and its all good.

i find it interesting that so many people overlook finger picking in funk, most go straight for the slap. you should check out the roots people like James Jamerson etc for great finger groove and lots of the bass work on James Browns material, such as the early stuff with bootsy. sex Machine is a classic simple funk bass groove, but to play it that tight and groovey and with feel is much harder i'd say than trying to replicate flea etc. Have a listen to hollywood by the chili's and then the Meters original version (known as africa by the meters), which one is funkier?, and another example...Higher Ground by the chili's which as been rocked up and slapped up but it's nowhere in the realms of funk that stevie grooves out, i had a live version somewhere of Stevie doing Higher ground....it blew my cling ons off!

What got me into the funk....probably the bass part on "Rappers Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang (Doug Wimbish?), although I doubt if it's lost on some of us that it's also the bass part to "Good Times" by Chic (Bernard Edwards - God bless 'im).
Since then - Jamerson's & Bob Babbitt's bass parts on the Motown stuff, Jerry Jemmott & Tommy Cogbill (Muscle Shoals & Fame/American studios) Atlantic sides, Marcus Miller with Dave Sanborn (Run for Cover!!), & good ol' Mark King with Level 42.
Also worth a mention - Jaco P, Stu Zender, Tom Barney, Nick Fyffe, Phil Mulford, Donald "Duck" Dunn and my bass teacher, Paul Geary.
Bootsy! - How could I forget him?!!

I'd have to say the 'good times/rappers delight' bassline is one of my all time favorites. Although probably one of the most copied basslines as well.
