Does anyone know when a good time would be to use the double stop technique

Whenever it feels good!
Frankly, if it sounds right, it is right, but generally I'll use them and power chords during solos to fill up the space, as we've only got the one guitar.

Agreed, double stops tend to sounds better when there's space.. otherwise they just muddy things up. On that basis I would tend to avoid using two particularly low notes toegther also as it just sounds really muddy. Quite distant intervals usually sound good, like 9ths, 10ths or 11ths: A + 9th = 5th fret E string, 4th fret G string. A + minor 10th = 5th fret E string, 5th fret G string. A + major 10th = 5th fret E string, 6th fret G string. A + 11th = 5th fret E string, 7th fret G string. A minor7 chord = 5th fret E string, 5th fret D string and 5th fret G string. A major 7 chord = 5th fret E string, 6th fret D string and 6th fret G string. A dominant 7 chord = 5th fret E string, 5th fret D string and 6th fret G string. Those shapes can be transferred to any root note. Higher up the neck closer intervals work better 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths work.. but you still have to have space to put them in and, as ever, if there's space you're better off leaving it empty

Double stopping is just playing 2 or more notes at the same time, a chord basically, but on instruments that are not chordal such as the bass or violins, or cellos, then its known as double stopping

Ah thanks, cool i already do that! It's gets confusing all these tech terms. I thought it was that thing wooten does when he slaps and pops the same string and then taps another note with his little finger with the same hand...thats a cool thing, wish i could do it! Guess its practice as usual, actually talking of practice i'm having a weird thing going on, since learning more and becoming more fluent and having a smoother groove i think i'm becoming less funky. i'm just listening to some loose early dirty Booyaka that i used to do and i think its funkier (although loose) than my more rounded smooth groove of today...just goes to show all flash definately aint all stash,,,hope i don't lose the dirt for a smooth milkshake...i prefer a pint of dirty Scrumpy! and a place on the Mothership! on da one!

er, not sure if i'm up over Xmas as i got a couple of gigs on over the Xmas period and new years eve etc. However i may come up for the Ozrics gig, not sure yet. On our Substation thing at Soundclick we've done a tune dedicated to you Acid jazz freaks called Dirty Torino, the lyrics (i think) are about a girl called Torino who's a rude girl...NICE! The bassline is a rip off off the first bass line in Learning Funkbass book/One of your basslines/beegees Stayling alive all done in a loose dirty Skidlee fashion! Will be cool in the Summer if you wanna team up and perhaps do a Gig in Plymouth or over at Newquay or something??? Our band is getting bigger by the day, a fit girls wants to join now as backing vox etc...that'll take the total up to 7 members...god we'll be a bloody Orchestra soon! Theirs only four of us though on the Soundclick rough tunes.
Peas....

[nitpicking]
Not strictly true. A double stop is two notes played together, wheras a chord is 3 notes or more, but bang on about the non-chordal stringed instruments.
