Just read retrokris' post about his fretless and he mentioned sliding harmonics. I have heard about these before but can't do it. Can it be done on a fretted bass? If so how?

I've tried on a fretted bass but the frets "knock out" any momentum the string's got and turn the note into a fundemental. This really is a fretless technique (and sounds great when it's well done).
Unless anyone can prove me wrong?

yeah im afraid its a fretless tecnique only. there really is no way to do it on fretted bass. ive recently been using it on double bass as well. but it is a very nice sound and can pay off if done well

if uve gt a fairly high action u can pull them off on a fretted as long as u dont press down to hard on the fingerbord.

low action for tapping and high action for sliding harmonics time to buy a double necked bass I reckon ;D tom is right it can be done on a fretted bass, I have seen his research on the subject

Apparently (I haven't tried this yet though) you play the harmonic then press the string down and slide. It can be done on a fretted bass (again I haven't tried this yet) but it's not easy and you can only slide a few frets (6+ frets is really, really hard).
I've just been watching Victor Wooten playing amazing grace and he plays a harmonic then raises the pitch of the string with the tuner - it's not a sliding harmonic but it's cool as f*ck!

ok ive just been sat on my arse being very geeky indeed, and i have found a way to play sliding harmonics on my higly actioned p-bass.....problem is i have been using a guitar slide...it takes some concetration but i got there in the end...im actually quite enjoying playing slide bass lol...although the fret noise drives me up the wall

Yeah, it can be done on fretted, but, as said above, only for a couple of frets, 5th to 7th or vice versa works ok, but beyond that just turns to fret noise more than anything else. Sounds cool on fretless tho... or at least it does to me.. but then I am a bassist, so there's no accounting for taste
