hello. i'm new here so please excuse my sophmoric questions. in searching for a combo amp i am stuck between a 1*15 vs a 4*10. what are the main differences between the two.
the two that i'm considering are: (Ashdown MAG C410T 4x10 with Tweeter 300W) and the (Ashdown MAG C115T 15 300W)
are these good amps? if no, any suggestions Logged

Hello and welcome to the forum
I'm not familiar which that actual make of amp but I am familiar with the different speaker configurations
You will find that a 1 X 15" speaker will give you a more bottom ended sound.
A 4 x 10" will give you a more middle/treble frequency orientated sound especialy with a tweeter.
I currently use a 1 x 15" Trace Elliot combo and this gives me a nice well rounded sound with plenty mid and treble frequencies as well. I have also used on many occasions 4 x 10" speaker cabs and I didn't like the sound as much - But that is just my opinion tho
My advice is to go and try as many different types as you can so you can make up your own mind on which type you prefer

sorry Mr GT i disagree, 4x10 all the way, it shifts more air, thats why great players like wooten & Miller have two of them stacked on each other. I would'nt bother with ashdown...i had a combo and i think with Ashdown your only paying for the name...the sound quality is dissappointing. i used a mag head not long ago with a covers band and was surprised in comparison to my Harkte 3500 head which arrived the day after and the hartke was half the price. I have a 18" which i've tried with the head and a 4x10...the 4x10 gets my vote every time! GT is a much groovier player than my goodself and has good advice...but i'm a qualified and working sound engineer...Peace & Love Paul hee hee xxx

-What do you mean by 4*10 pushes more air?
-Does more air mean more bottom?
-What are some more differences between 4*10 and 1*15
-Is a tweeter the same as a horn?
thanks for the help

By more Air i mean it shifts more direct sound. It's to do with sound pressures but i won't bore you with all that. What style do you intend to play and what type of venues you aiming at to play???
If your doing Rock reggae punk etc then i'd go for the 15" if your doing Funk, Jazz, Pop etc then perhaps the 4x10 would be a better choice. If you can get a set up that includes aluminium cones on a 4x10 you'll be smiling. Another advantage of the 4x10 is if a speaker fails you still have three left where as if the single 15 goes yum's buggered!

i'll be using the amp for coopereate party/wedding gigs playing all types of music. mainly tropical carribean music.
i need an all around good amp. like you said, if 4*10 is good enough for the pros.....

The upshot is try them out and listen to your ears - other people's opinions are exactly that - their's!
Over the years I've switched between a 4x12 and a 1x15. To be honest, a lot depends on the manufacturer and even between the different drivers from the same company. The best compromise (!) is to use a 1x15 and a 1x10 - the best of both worlds!
I don't know if they still do it, but Celestion used to have a comparison board on their website where they had a piece of music played through various drivers - it's incredible the amount of difference from one to the other.

Ashdown are fine amps, i have a MAG combo but i went for the 2x10" with a 15" extension speaker!! best of both worlds! fantastic amp, great sound by no means are you paying for the name! I would seriously recommend this set up the 15" does move air like nobodies business and the 2x10" adds that attack and clarity!!
