I use one and I've had a few basses but the Jazz is so versatile you can get any bass sound out of it you want.
Simplicity is the key. You get 2 volumes (1 for each pick up) and a tone control
Just by using the volume controls you can get a really funky sound (Loads of attack, eg. funk/jazz/fusion sound) or a really heavy sound by using both. You would have to use one to hear what I mean. Or a Bootsy sound by using the neck pick up. I suppose thats why a lot of session players use them!!
The only thing I don't like about the bass is it's really heavy and you have to train yourself to be able to stand the weight for the length of a gig - Or maybe I'm just a girl thingy!!

I'm a good Friend of Mr Torino and have to agree hole heartedly that the Jazz bass is Superior. i've had a stingray and they're good but not as versatile as the Jazz. i used to play Precision copies with EMG's which were ok but again lacked full tone. I borrowed a 74 Jazz of a session guy and he talked me into getting a Jazz bass-he recommended the Japanese Marcus Miller bass as the quality was actually better than the Americans bass's (which is true) and half the price-i got mine for £675-half the price of a Muiscman!!! And i was amazed, it was much better than the 74 with regards to build etc which my session mate agreed too. I did get some EMG's given to me which was nice and i personally feel this bass ia amazing-Ash body, Maple neck & Active elecs...amazing! i've now made friends with several other Jazz bass users and there are a few regrets going around (don't bother with the mexicans either...poor quality) downside of Japenese is you don't get a case. Also there are rumours that Fender are stopping Japan making the Signature series as apparantly they're too good.....says it all!

Not a problem unless you decide you'd like to take the plate off (can look tres sexy like this).
