What's all this talk about scales?
All you need to know about bass is - what chord are we playing? I'll play the root. Twice if I'm being flash.

i have to admit i do use lots of scales in playing, otherwise i get a bit bored. i just like to give the bass lines a bit of melody, but nothing beats the pound of a root note

Agreed, if in doubt play the root, if not in doubt, play the root... basically, just play the goddam root! By default no scale shouldnt be crippling if you use the one finger per fret method because you have the entire octave under your fingers. 2 cotaves scales can be tricky depending one where you put the position shift, but again, yoyu should be abel to manage the vast majority of 2 octave scales with just one shift
